From the walls of Porto to archives of the Spanish Civil War, and from revolutions across the Arab world to the memory of the Harlem Renaissance, Porto/Post/Doc’s Special Screenings bring together six films that question who gets to tell history, occupy public space and decide what remains visible.
In Atlas of Disappearance, Manuel Correa follows three families searching for the remains of relatives who disappeared during the Spanish Civil War, bringing together citizen archives, digital maps and forensic technologies. Revolutionaries Never Die, by Mohanad Yaqubi, returns to footage shot by Jocelyne Saab between 1973 and 1983 to revisit conflicts, revolutions and movements of solidarity across the Arab world.
Archive is also the starting point for Once Upon a Time in Harlem, by William and David Greaves, created from unseen footage shot in 1972, when William Greaves gathered figures connected to the Harlem Renaissance at Duke Ellington’s townhouse. In Portugal, The House Play, by Tiago Bartolomeu Costa and Joana Cunha Ferreira, looks back over 180 years of the D. Maria II National Theatre to explore the relationship between artistic creation, history and changing ideas of nationhood.
The city becomes a contested space in Street Curators, by Luís Pedro Fernandes Lobato Costa and António Ricardo Antunes Toga, which traces three decades of graffiti, erasure and interventions across Porto’s walls. Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness, by Massoud Bakhshi, takes us inside a live Iranian television programme where the fate of a woman sentenced to death depends on the forgiveness of the daughter of the man she accidentally killed.
