Vojtěch Jasný’s poetic chronicle follows the inhabitants of a small Moravian village from the end of the Second World War into the years of Communist collectivisation. What begins as a celebration of solidarity, music, work, and attachment to the land darkens as coercion and fear transform relationships between neighbours. Banned soon after its premiere, the film remains a landmark of Czech cinema.
