The PPD Awards Ceremony is preceded by the screening of Aya Koretzky's new short film, Time Takes a Cigarette (whose title is a quote from David Bowie's beautiful song "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide"). The film was made as part of the Working Class Heroes project. Organised in partnership between the festival and Filmaporto, this project aims to support film production in the city of Porto, using local professionals and stories from the city. Time Takes a Cigarette was the winning project of Working Class Heroes in its first edition, in 2022.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, rock and punk bands began to appear in Porto. The 25th of April 1974, which ended Europe's longest dictatorship, brought political and creative freedom. Discotheques such as Griffon’s and Lá Lá opened, energising musical culture in Portugal. Through a series of tableaux vivants based on photographs of the time, whose models are the young people of Porto today, the film tells, in the first person, short personal stories of those who were at the heart of that era.
