The Minhocão, or ‘‘giant earthworm’’, is an elevated highway, built in the 1970s, which crosses the Brazilian city of São Paulo. This urban scar – a monument to the automobile – is nowadays closed to vehicles on Sundays, and used by the population for cycling, walking or partying. What was once an insult to the city becomes a place for meeting and sharing.
