In the film When Night Falls, Ying Liang addresses the problem of police abuses in China. This work earned him a series of ominous visits, interrogations and, finally, his exile in Hong Kong. In 2018 Liang, from a seemingly very conventional fictional format, exposes, in A Family Tour, his personal experience of exile. The character of a woman director, Yang Shu, travels to Taiwan with her family to attend a film festival. His mother stages a tourist trip to be able, in occasional meetings, to see her family in exile. With a cinematography touched by the tourist aura of a well-spent vacation, the film overflows with trauma and loss where nothing seems to be seen. In careful shots, the need to reflect on the pain and anger of a state of political exile breaks out, even if this calls into question any possibility of return. (Rita Morais)
