Easter Island is known throughout those famous monumental anthropomorphic sculptures braving the Pacific Ocean. We all have seen those images of people made of stone while knowing almost nothing about the people actually living there for centuries. Rapa Nui culture achieved to survive Chilian colonization despite what can be considered as an apartheid and a drastic occupation of native population’s lands. While confronting our conception of cultural difference, Solitary Island is questioning colonial principles we all inherited. Combining found footage, ethnographic material and contemporary narratives, this film is a deeply poetic and thoughtful journey into the history and culture of this faraway island. It is also a sensitive tribute to Rapa Nui people and a philosophical investigation about isolation, freedom, belonging and exile. (Audrey Bartis)
