At first, the clouds seem to move around Mount Fuji. But also in Chris Marker's La Jetée, there was movement: Ascent is a visual rehearsal that uses only photographs (more than 4000), all of them from this mysterious volcano mountain, object of obsession of the filmmaker. About these images, Fiona Tan weaves a poetic plot full of stories and sound environments, mixing different times and genres, documentary and fiction, philosophical thought and Japanese legends, intimate or collective and cultural memory. As for this ascent, we make it to the sound of two voices: her and that of her late Japanese lover, approaching and withdrawing as if from a dance, never embracing in the same time or space, nor ever revealing in the completeness of their love story. In this truly impressive film, unexpected paths open to every fragment and on the rise we sense that this mountain, unconditional symbol of the country of the rising sun, has a certain intangibility difficult to explain. If on the one hand it is ubiquitous, since it rests in the background in all Japanese photographs, its essence always seems unreachable. (Lídia Queirós)
